Jože Barši at City Art Gallery of Ljubljana

City Art Gallery of Ljubljana LJUBLJANA | SLOVENIA

FEB 22, 2021 - APR 11, 2021

Jože Barši, who entered the art scene in the late 1980s as a member of the so-called New Slovene Sculpture generation, has left a significant mark on the development of contemporary Slovenian visual art after the year 1990. From the very beginning, his work focused on changing the relations of the artist and public towards an artwork.

Throughout the 1990s, he complemented this with other key themes such as the question of what makes a sculpture an artwork, or when and where does art begin and when does it “return” or remains a part of everyday reality. The presentation of the exhibition format as an artwork in and of itself represents an important point of reflection within Barši’s oeuvre regarding the idea of an artwork as a form of expression as well as its mediating function within set forms of presentation and presentational spaces. Barši’s exhibitions are some kind of externalized metal sketches with which the artist critically observes not only the art object, with its materiality and representational quality, but also indirectly analyses social codes and norms.
